History: Lord Chelmsford, formerly Governor of Queensland, was appointed Governor of New South Wales in 1909. Government House was then at ‘Cranbrook’ (before it became a school in 1918) and Lord Chelmsford frequently played golf at Royal Sydney. In 1910 His Excellency presented a cup known in that year as ‘The Governor’s Cup’, won by C.W. Rundle.
The 1911 the Governor donated a permanent trophy named ‘The Challenge Cup’; this later became known as ‘The Chelmsford Cup’. Lord Chelmsford continued to use the Royal Sydney Links until he left New South Wales in 1913.
C.W. Rundle presented his 1910 ‘Governor’s Cup’ to the Club in 1956. It is now awarded as a trophy for the winner of the B Grade Championship, known as the ‘Governor’s Cup’.
