Hampden Cup
Sport: Golf
Gender: Men
Typically Held: May
Course: Championship – white tees
Summary: 36-Hole Par event for Members of Royal Sydney and The Australian Golf Club for Members with Daily Handicaps of 15 and below. Played on a Saturday in May, alternate years at Royal Sydney and AGC.
History: Presented in 1897 by the Viscount Hampden, Governor of New South Wales, the Trophy was the Cup for the Championship of New South Wales until 1902. Lord Hampden was an enthusiastic patron of NSW golf, at a time when (effectively) there were only two Metropolitan Clubs. A difficulty arose when the ‘powers-that-be’ wanted to change the format of the Hampden Cup to either stroke or match-play (there were proponents on both sides) as Lord Hampden’s instructions had been that this should be a bogey (par) event.
Traditions & Standards: Trophy and prize awarded after play, and recognised at President & Captain’s Dinner if won by a Member of Royal Sydney.
Dress: Golf attire for presentation.
