History: “The Lakes Golf Club competed in the Masters Pennants for many years before deciding to withdraw from the 1995 competition series. Kinglsey Wilson, then Captain of The Lakes Golf Club, approached the Australian GC , NSW GC, and Royal Sydney with the view of holding an alternative round robin competition. Representatives from each Club met at The Lakes on Wednesday 19th July 1995, after enjoying a friendly round of golf and finalised the details. It was agreed that all players were to be at least 55 years of age. Deciding upon a name for the competition, Des Turner representing The Australian, suggested “”LARN”” formed from the name of each Club, i.e, “”L”” Lakes, “”A”” Australian, “”R”” Royal Sydney, “”N”” NSW. A suitable Cup was found in The Lakes’ storeroom in a slightly battered state, however, after careful restoration and attachment of each Club’s medals or badges, The LARN Cup had evolved.
Foundation Committee: Kingsley Wilson (The Lakes), Des Turner (The Australian), Richard Hattersley (Royal Sydney), Robert Dick (New South Wales).
Royal Sydney won he first LARN Cup in 1996. This was the first Royal Sydney Mens’ Golf Team to win a Major event, albeit with only four Clubs competing, since the Major Pennants win
in 1938, 58 years earlier.
