Summary: Four Ball Best Ball Stableford Match Play friendly match between Elanora Country Club and The Royal Sydney Golf Club. Team of 20 players aged 55 and over. The winner of a match contributes one point to their team, in the event of a squared match, 1/2 point is awarded to each team. The team with the highest score wins the day. In the event of a tie, the winner of the previous year’s event retains the trophy.
Hosted in alternate years at Royal Sydney and Elanora. Usually played on a Friday in May
History: Elanora was founded in 1929 with its first President Colonel T A J Playfair at that time on the committee at Royal Sydney.There has been a friendly relationship ever since between the two clubs with some members belonging to both clubs.
In 1972 Mrs GI (Mary) Gregory who had been both Lady President of Elanora and Associate President of Royal Sydney donated two silver fighting cocks for the Associate Members of both clubs to compete for in the event “Sydney versus The Bush”.
In 2000 Tony Parker (Captain, Elanora 1998-2004) and Ross Adair (Captain, Royal Sydney 2000-2004) established the Bushwakers Cup event for the male members of the two clubs to meet in good fellowship over lunch followed by golf. In 2000 Tony Parker purchased the cup and Ross Adair arranged for the base. Conditions of play were drawn up at a meeting at Royal Sydney and the first match was held at Royal Sydney in 2001.
Traditions & Standards: Championship tee is used on 1st hole. Other holes use white tees.
The aim was to produce lasting relationships, and accordingly, the tradition is for those who played the previous year to receive priority invitations to play.
Dress: Historically, jacket and tie have been worn for lunch prior to play, however, this is now optional and golf attire is acceptable.
