Weekenders’ Interclub Challenge Salver
Sport: Golf
Gender: Women
Typically Held: June
Course: Championship
Summary: Inter-club Individual Stableford event for ‘weekenders’, (women whose work precludes them from playing in mid-week competitions) to encourage friendship between the participating clubs – Royal Sydney, The Lakes, Bonnie Doon, St Michaels and NSW. Teams of five players from each club. Final score is the team aggregate. Played on Sundays in winter; Royal Sydney usually hosts a Challenge round on the long weekend in June.
History: This event replaced individual matches against St.Michael’s, The Lakes, NSW and Bonnie Doon. The five club trophy event was instigated by Margaret Doyle, Lady Captain in about 2000 soon after Royal Sydney women had become full Members and the trophy was donated by Royal Sydney. Marg Doyle was a business lady herself and knew what it was to work and want to play golf. All teams play at one club on a single day, enabling all Weekenders from the participating clubs to get to know each other and each club only has to provide tee times on one day to accomodate everyone. The winner for the year is the club with the overall best points from all 5 courses. This meant all Weekenders would get to know the business ladies from other Clubs and each Club would only have to give up one day to accommodate everyone. The Australian Golf Club was never included in this, although it is believed they were asked to join but declined. The (very few) business women from the Australian GC did not want to risk losing their dedicated times on a Sunday as a consequence of leaving their spots vacants.
Royal Sydney and Bonnie Doon hold a competition for a salver in conjunction with this event. The two sets of scores from the two Sundays played at Bonnie Doon and Royal Sydney are added to determine the winning team.
Traditions & Standards: Presentation after play for daily prizes. Final presentation held at The Lakes in November. Casual lunch at players own expense after golf.
Dress: Golf attire after play.
